Serenity in the City
Nestled among the buildings of a quiet Shinjuku neighborhood, this Rinzai Zen temple was founded in 1632 and once ranked among the prestigious “Kantō Ten Great Zen Temples," counting the Tokugawa Shogunate as one of its many visitors. Its front gate opens onto an inner sanctuary—closed to the public—where a modern main hall now stands in place of the original wooden structure, lost in a fire long ago. Amidst the surrounding high-rises, it offers a peaceful pause, standing as a timeless guardian of history and spiritual calm. Under guidance from the head monk, step through the temple gate and take a guided tour of the grounds. Then, retreat into the main hall and search for the calm within your soul through zazen meditation led by the monk himself.
