All in Hand

The freedom of freehand allows for a visually stunning range of creative designs, with sprawling swathes of fabric covered in intricate dots, elegant lines, and rich color. Compared to kyo-yuzen, the style of yuzen dyeing originating in Kyoto where each step in the production process is overtaken by different specialists, Tokyo yuzen artisans complete all aspects of creation themselves, from design to dyeing, style to stenciling, allowing for expanded creative control over the final outcome. Rather than affixing color only inside the lines set by other artisans, craftspeople can follow inspiration as it strikes, adding freehand senbyo lines and gradations of small, dense tenbyo dots. Tokyo yuzen-dyed silk kimonos also feature designs more subdued and artfully minimalist than kyo-yuzen kimono, which are characterized by vivid, opulent designs. At this central Tokyo atelier, immerse into the art of yuzen dyeing surrounded by local residents equally committed to studying this traditional textile technique. Within this atmosphere of passionate dedication, select and complete your own Tokyo yuzen masterpiece following the guidance of the master, while learning about the history and cultural significance of the craft.
