The Heartbeat of Japan

The reverberations of the taiko drum echo not just through space, but through the body and spirit. From the thunderous booms of o-daiko, towering drums taller than a person, to the sharp crack of smaller shime-daiko, taiko rhythms have pulsed through Japanese history for centuries. With multifarious uses—from communication to religious chants, traditional theater to contemporary performance—the song of the taiko is interwoven everywhere, bridging ancient ritual with modern culture. While currently, taiko drums can be constructed from a wide range of materials, traditional taiko were once carved whole from the trunk of a keyaki tree, transformed into hollow caverns and covered with a piece of animal hide, pinned precisely in place by metal studs, a work of art in construction alone. Step into this tradition yourself by joining a professional wadaiko master, a performer who has graced stages both within Japan and around the world. In a private workshop, you’ll learn not only the essential techniques of stance, grip, and rhythm, but also the deeper philosophy behind the art—the harmony of body, breath, and drum. Feel the resounding rhythm course through your body as you strike, letting the sound of the taiko—Japan's heartbeat—ground you in the present moment.
