Wearing History and Culture

Originating during the Heian period, following inspiration from Chinese-style garments, the ancestor of the modern kimono was made as a garment that fit any body type. When it entered the Edo period, it became known as kosode, or small sleeve, called thus due to its small arm holes. Vibrant and loud kimono designs were developed and worn by popular cultural figures of the Edo period, such as kabuki actors and geisha, who in turn inspired the styles and trends within the fashion worn by the masses. With the arrival of the Meiji period and Westernization in Japan, kimono became less of everyday wear and more of a symbol of Japanese culture amidst the arrival of Western-style clothing. Eventually, in the current times, kimono has become a codified garment, worn to represent different stages of life, such as coming-of-age or for weddings and other formal occasions. At this kimono styling studio in the heart of Tokyo, get a glimpse at both traditional and modern designs of kimono, as well as the traditionally woven and dyed textiles. Guided by a traditional kimono stylist, learn about the textiles and designs of kimono. Then, conclude your kimono textile experience by wearing an ensemble curated by the stylist herself and selected by you.
