Beauty by the Bristle

From tip to handle, every Edo brush embodies the spirit of craftsmanship. Lacquerware artisans, scroll framers, and a wide circle of traditional craftsmen have long relied on these brushes, where the uncompromising quality of Edo hake remains essential to their work. Yet their appeal extends far beyond the artisan community—everyday people also seek them out, from finely crafted makeup brushes to those designed to clean the delicate spouts of teapots. Simple in form yet refined in detail, each brush is made from Japanese wood, sometimes finished with a lustrous lacquer sheen, and threaded with bristles sourced from a variety of animals. Every piece is made with care—and made to last. With over a century of history, the workshop is now led by third-generation artisan Kumiko, who continues the legacy inherited from her father, an award-winning master craftsman celebrated for preserving Japan’s traditional techniques. Still housed in the same historic building on the outskirts of Asakusa, Kumiko runs a combined studio and storefront, welcoming visitors as she deftly brings together a range of crafting techniques to complete brushes by hand. Discover the art behind the tool that brings other traditional crafts to life and imbues even everyday life with subdued artisan beauty.
