Natural Serenity
Founded in 1282, Engakuji is one of Kamakura’s most important Zen temples and a serene gateway to Rinzai Zen Buddhism. Nestled at the foot of the forested hills in northern Kamakura, this historic temple was established by the powerful regent Hojo Tokimune and Chinese Zen master Mugaku Sogen after the Mongol invasions, to honor fallen warriors and promote peace through Zen practice. As the head temple of a major Rinzai Zen branch, Engakuji became a spiritual hub for Japan’s samurai, blending Zen discipline with cultural refinement. Today, its vast grounds are home to numerous sub-temples—spaces of training for future monks and places where the community can engage with Zen practices. Traverse the expanse of the temple grounds, surrounded by nature, then quietly take part in zazen meditation, guided by the head monk of one of the sub-temples.
