A Legacy of Art and Entertainment
Tucked into the bustling metropolitan landscape of Tokyo, hanamachi continue to thrive in various areas hidden throughout the city, sustaining the centuries-old artistic practices of geisha. One such neighborhood is Akasaka, a small-scale hanamachi that flourished in the early Meiji period, serving prestigious clientele who worked in the financial and governmental sectors surrounding the district. In its heyday, Akasaka's streets sustained over 400 professional geisha. These multi-faceted entertainers were not only masters of conversation, but also underwent rigorous training in a range of performing arts, including dancing and playing the koto or shamisen. Currently, just under 20 geisha carry on this craft in Akasaka, preserving the culture and traditions for future generations. Indulge in a luxurious meal crafted using seasonal ingredients while enjoying the artistic performances of geisha, right in the center of Tokyo.
