The Top Pick
Nestled into a cove along the ocean, full of warm, direct sunlight, and nourished by the mineral-rich seaside spray, is a sprawling citrus farm with over 1000 trees and an ever-expanding variety of species grown. Operated by a father-son pair who boast nearly two centuries of family history, the orchard has seen its fair share of Japan's national history as well, from the tea ceremony hosted on top of the hills by renowned tea ceremony master Sen no Rikyu, personally invited by shogun Hideyoshi Toyitam, to the Tokugawa government using rocks taken from the quarry to create the base for cannons strategically placed in Tokyo Bay to ward against incoming Western advancement. In this same soil, an abundance of bright gold and vivid orange citrus now grow, tended to carefully by expert hands. Their specialty is mikan, a citrus whose flavor varies depending upon when it's plucked, but the farm also features blood orange, bergamot, and the famous Shonan Gold - a bright yellow fruit that has restricted cultivation everywhere outside the borders of Kanagawa Prefecture. As you stroll along these seaside orchards, surrounded by nature and the thick scent of citrus, discover more about the region's unique agricultural aspects and the history of the family cultivating Japan's wide array of delicious mikan.
