Shifting the Weight
Derived from jujitsu techniques, judo is an internationally known Japanese martial art that involves throwing techniques, with a focus on flexibility over brute force. In contrast, jujitsu was a series of techniques meant to injure or end your opponent on the battlefield, developed during the Warring States era in Japanese history, when battles were part of daily life. The founder of judo, Jigoro Kano, sought to create a "way" of hand-to-hand martial arts that did not rely on brute force alone; a "way" that matched the more peaceful times heralded by the opening of Japan to the rest of the world, during the Meiji era. At this local dojo tucked away amidst the office buildings of central Tokyo, experience the soft yet firm martial art that is judo. Join the head instructor, an all-Japan judo champion, and learn step-by-step how to do some of the standard throwing techniques utilized in judo.
