(Paper) Frame of Mind

Arriving in Japan with the teachings of Buddhism, the art of hyougu first began in the Kyoto region, where art and religion flourished during the Nara and Heian periods, before spreading throughout Japan. During the height of Buddhism in Japan, hyougu framing techniques focused on creating scrolls from written manuals and teachings and on creating decorative hanging scrolls for Buddhist teachings and images. When the tokonoma alcove was developed as an important part of the Japanese-style house structure, hyougu artisans were tasked with creating the hanging scrolls that would hang in this special space, as well as byoubu folding screens. In addition, the elements of fusuma sliding doors and shoji paper windows and doors were added to the hyougu artisans' repertoire, solidifying their role as important artisans in the creation of a traditional Japanese-style home. At this workshop in Kamakura, join the 3rd-generation artisan and immerse yourself in the delicate and careful craft of hyougu framing. View in progress and completed works, as well as the materials and tools the artisans use. Finally, try your hand at creating a miniature double-sided picture frame following traditional techniques used in hyougu framing.
