Engraved with Care

Edo Kiriko, or the craft of glass engraving, first surfaced in Edo (modern day Tokyo) towards the latter part of the Edo period. Edo glass craftspeople created this new craft by imitating the style of glass pieces that had come into Japan from Europe, especially Spain and Portugal. In its advent, Edo kiriko glassware was only clear but this gradually turned to a wide ranging color palette that has led to the creation of even multi-colored glass pieces. The engraved designs are based on traditional Japanese patterns and objects, creating an endless amount of combinations of designs. At this studio and shop, join this Edo kiriko artisan in going through all the steps in the creation of a final product. Under guidance of the master artisan, select a pattern of your choice and practice on a clear glass piece. Then create your very own Edo kiriko colored glass piece to take home a piece of Edo craft history.
