Ancient Slopes

At an altitude of 1,614 meters, Mt. Hachimantai is noted as being one of the top 100 mountains in Japan. Despite its name and altitude, this mountain has relatively gentle inclines, making it a prime location for hikers seeking a less challenging climb. It is situated behind the looming silhouette of Mt. Iwate, otherwise known as Nambu Fuji, for its likeness to Mt. Fuji in the Kanto region. In the late spring, summer, and early autumn months, more than 20 varieties of wildflowers can be observed blossoming on the banks and slopes of Mt. Hachimantai’s vast marshlands and caldera lakes. Join a local hiking guide and trek to the peak of Mt. Hachimantai, while learning about the surrounding landscape and the effects of the volcanic activity of nearby Mt. Iwate. Depending on the selected trail, explore the various caldera lakes and more of Mt. Hachimantai itself, shaped by ancient volcanic activity.
