One Breath at a Time

Originally founded in 1254, the temple was moved to its present location in 1633 due to the construction of Morioka Castle. A temple that houses the resting places of generations of Nambu domain leaders, it was first established as a location to honor the memory of the 1st-generation Nambu domain lord, Mitsuyuki. Over the centuries and through the turmoils of war, the temple preserved the treasures and relics of the Nambu family, which are now held at Morioka History and Culture Museum. The Nambu family ruled the same area for nearly 700 years, a feat achieved by only a handful of other feudal lord families. Enter the grounds of this historic space and embark on a compact tour of Morioka City's history and the ruling Nambu family's history within the temple grounds. Then, experience zazen meditation led by the head monk.
