The Finest Grain
Quarried in the town of Aji in Takamatsu, with breathtaking views of the Setouchi Sea, Aji granite is one of Japan’s most renowned types of stone. Unlike the standard granite with large crystals, Aji granite is known for its fine grain, elegant texture, and exceptional durability and it has been prized for centuries in both traditional and modern stonework—from temple lanterns to high-end architectural projects. Its subtle gray hue and ability to take a polished finish make it especially valued by sculptors and stonemasons across Japan, with its main market being stone tombstones. At this Aji granite masonry company, the artisans explore new ways in which the Aji granite can be utilized besides the finely polished tombstone. They breath new life into the raw material stone and the by-products of the production process by crafting household items for everyday use. With one of the Aji stone masonry artisans as your guide, experience the creation process of a pair of Aji granite bookends by selecting a rock yourself, observing the cutting and polishing process, and finally taking home a piece of Takamatsu's history.
