Woven from Soul
Versatile, flexible, and sustainable, bamboo is a material with near-endless application in Japan. From bamboo shoots consumed as a culinary delicacy to woodwind instruments like the shakuhachi constructed from the core, the native-grown plant has flourished in areas across Japanese culture. Within this myriad of applications lies takezaiku, or bamboo weaving, which features thin strips of painstakingly dried bamboo crafted together into everyday objects. While baskets have historically been the most favored takezaiku item, especially prized in the Edo Period as travel souvenirs, modern takezaiku pieces range in structure and utilization. The only takezaiku bamboo artisan remaining on Okinawa's main island, Kanki-san is the third generation of artisan in his family to pursue the art of crafting bamboo items with handmade techniques. His studio overflows with woven baskets, oversized vases, sweeping chandeliers, and near-lifesize statues of creatures seemingly poised to take action, even crafting items to be used by the former Japanese Emperor and Empress. Join him in his takezaiku studio as he diligently works to preserve this beautiful craft and experience bamboo weaving yourself under his welcoming guidance.
