A History of Harmony

According to temple legend, the great Buddhist monk and founder of the Tendai School of Buddhism, Enchin, saw a mysterious light shining out from the eastern mountains of the Ariake Sea. After trekking through dense forests and up steep inclines, he arrived at the source - a moss-covered, sacred hinoki tree. Interpreting this as a divine blessing, Enchin carved a 5-meter tall statue of Buddha from the tree, and in 806 AD, erected a temple hall to enshrine the statue. Now, centuries later, these hallowed grounds still serve as a community of devout worshippers, specializing in offering seated Zazen meditation that links bodily awareness with introspection. Through careful breath control and comfortable yet erect posture, Zazen meditation practitioners learn to root themselves in the present moment, seeking a precise balance between relaxation and concentration. Experience meditation guided by the temple's head monk at this representative Buddhist temple with over 1,200 years of history.
