Freedom over Form
Anytime, anywhere, with any material - these tenets form the basis of Sogestsu-style ikebana, a school of flower arrangement which emphasizes creative freedom over restrictive forms or arbitrary rules. From refined collections of blooms arching out of tabletop vases to wide-sweeping constructions spanning from floor to ceiling, the artistry of ikebana knows no bounds. What once began as Buddhist altar offerings, dating as early as the 6th century, developed over the centuries into a sprawling collection of schools, each with its own philosophies. Compared to ikebana's ancient origins, Sogetsu's start in 1927 by headmaster Sofu Teshigahara reflects far more contemporary tastes, eschewing fixed forms codified centuries prior. The usage of space and unconventional material, combined with the priority placed on personal creativity, makes Sogestu ikebana optimal for exploring the intersection between art and the natural world. Under the tutelage of a family of award-winning ikebana artists, discover a contemporary approach to ikebana that values intuition, experimentation, and personal expression.
