Teachings from the Heart
Zazen, the cornerstone of Zen Buddhist meditation, emerged in Japan as a direct, unembellished approach to spiritual practice. Unlike ritual-heavy branches of Buddhism, Zazen emphasizes seated meditation as the path to awakening. Practitioners sit upright in quiet rooms, focusing on breath while observing passing thoughts with detachment. This minimalist approach reflects Zen's core belief: that insight comes not from scriptures or renunciation, but from consistent, grounded experience in the present moment. At this historic Fukuoka temple, founded in the Kamakura Period when the samurai warrior class rose in power and Zen Buddhism proliferated, discover the core of Zen teachings in a private Zazen session led by the temple's head monk. Delve deeper into both the temple's heritage and Rinzai-style zen teachings, focused on the search for enlightenment through training, practice, and thought. Let stillness and silence center you, steady in breath and posture, and open in mind and heart.
