Brewing Perfection
Rows and rows of rich green shrubs stretch far into the horizon, ending only where the sky begins. With a temperate, subtropical climate and volcanically-enriched soil, tea cultivation flourishes in Kagoshima, boasting up to 5 different harvesting periods. Japan's top tea-producing prefecture, the majority of Kagoshima tea farms currently specialize in sencha, delicate green tea made from first harvest leaves, and bancha, robust green tea from later harvest leaves. However, more and more companies are focusing on matcha as well, addressing the ever-rising popularity of powdered green tea both domestically and internationally. At this award-winning Kirishima tea farm with over 100 years of history, the pursuit of innovation is matched only by the dedication to quality. Operated by the 4th-generation owner, organic practices, such as utilizing steam rather than pesticides to remove weeds, ensure both healthy plants and a healthy flavor. Tour the fields and factories with the owner, diving into both the practices of commercial tea cultivation and the beauty of Kagoshima's scenery. Cup of tea steaming in hand, enjoy this full immersion into Kagoshima's agricultural heritage.
