Lustrous Lacquerware

At the heart of kintsugi repair is urushi, a natural lacquer harvested from the urushi tree for thousands of years. This time-honored material has been applied to everything from everyday tableware and samurai armor to sacred ceremonial objects and musical instruments. Renowned for its exceptional strength and luminous finish, urushi plays a dual role in kintsugi — it bonds the fractured ceramic pieces and serves as the adhesive for the fine gold dust that illuminates each seam. In this way, urushi acts as both tool and canvas, enabling the transformation of breakage into beauty. No two kintsugi pieces are ever alike: each fracture tells its own story, and each repair reflects the hand of its maker. Learn how to tell your own story of resilience and creativity in a kintsugi and urushi workshop led by professional artisans. As graduates of Japan’s most exclusive art university, these masters bring a deep understanding of both technique and philosophy. With their guidance, you'll not only gain hands-on experience with kintsugi materials, but also a new perspective on restoration, where gold, lacquer, and ceramics become an act of quiet elegance and intention.
