In Frame
Bordered by precisely cut silk, the bold strokes of black ink stand in elegant contrast to the empty white space—calligraphy painted generations ago by the hand of a master. The timeless beauty of such works endures, preserved and elevated through the refined craft of hyogu, or traditional Japanese art mounting. More than just a frame, hyogu highlights the innate beauty of hanging scrolls, folding screens, and other paper- or silk-based artwork. This art form not only showcases modern creations but also plays a vital role in conserving cultural treasures, protecting delicate works from damage while enhancing their aesthetic presence. Requiring both technical mastery and a keen eye for design, every choice, from fabric to layout, must complement the soul of the art framed within. At this Fukuoka studio, a father-and-son duo continues the tradition with care and precision. With generations of experience behind them, they invite visitors into their studio to witness this meticulous craft firsthand. See how art is honored, border by border, peice by peice.
