The Real Uji Tea
Since the Zen Buddhist monk Eisai brought Chinese tea plants to Japan in the 12th Century, the town of Uji has been the heart of Japanese green tea production. Although tea fields spread beyond Uji, Uji tea has always been known for its high quality—so much so that it alone was referred to as honcha or “real tea”. With the spread of domestic tea, a uniquely Japanese culture of tea came into being, known as chadō or the “way of tea”. Championed first by the Buddhist priesthood, and then by the noble and samurai class, Uji tea eventually became a staple for all of Japan. In this experience, visit the tea fields and factory of one of Uji’s most esteemed tea producers. See the process from picking raw tea leaves (tencha) and the processing methods of grinding the matcha tea powder. At the end, try your hand at grinding your own matcha and experience a tea ceremony and tea tasting led by the masters.
