Handpainted Elegance

Bursting with natural motifs and vivid, elaborate patterns, kyo-yuzen is a nearly 300-year-old technique for dyeing kimono fabric. These motifs would include flowers, birds, seasonal scenery, as well as other traditional patterns. The method was developed and established in the late 17th century to early 18th century by Miyazaki Yuzensai, a Kyoto-based fan painter, who adapted his way of painting for cloth, creating a unique freehand, or hand-painted, dye technique. Step into the studio started by a husband and wife duo of masters of traditional kyo-yuzen dyeing, and immerse yourself in the world of this elegant and colorful craft. With around 10-20 steps in the process of making a finalized kyo-yuzen dyed work of art, this workshop focuses on the hand-painting, as the overall process of kyo-yuzen is undertaken by various craftspeople, each specialized in their portion of the process. After getting a glimpse into the careful hand-painting by the studio artisans, try your hand at hand-painting your very own kyo-yuzen textile piece of your choice and take home with you this traditional Kyoto art.
