Cutting Edge

On the outskirts of Kyoto, surrounded by lush rural views and scenic charm, is the sword forge of one diligent katana master continuing to craft these elegant works of both weapon and art. Created from tamahagane steel, a rare type produced exclusively in Japan, katana swords embody centuries of history and the spirit of the maker into a single blade. The heritage of katana swords in Japan extends back to some of the nation's earliest literature in the 8th century and has evolved with the times through periods of intense warfare, eras of peace and social stability, to modern times, where each blade is treated with near-spiritual reverence. While only an estimated less than 150 katana swordsmiths are still actively operating their katana forges in Japan, the master of this Kyoto katana studio proudly sustains the heritage of Japanese swords for future generations. Feel the heat of the forge's flames as you learn more about the history and techniques of crafting katana from a master swordsmith.
