Tea and Teachings
When Buddhism made landfall in Japan more than a millennium ago, tea also arrived, accompanied by the methods used to consume tea. These seedlings of the way of tea first took root amongst the ranks of Buddhism practising monks, as well as the higher echelons of society. The monks wove the practice of tea into their practices and way of life. It would not be until the Edo Period, roughly 400 years ago, that tea would begin to be enjoyed by the general public. At this temple tucked away in western Kyoto, the practised movements of a tea master are combined with the patience and poise of the head monk of the temple. Experience a urasenke tea ceremony in the temple that was the first Soto Zen temple built in Kyoto. Savour freshly whisked matcha and traditional and seasonal wagashi along with a small lecture by the head priest about the teachings of Buddhism.
