Silver Linings

The pounding of hammer against silver; the hiss of flame as metal is heated and warped; the unwavering chip of tools striking, again and again, until the final product arises, gleaming with a lustrous sheen and imbued with intricate craftsmanship. For millennia, metal has been an inextricable craft in Japanese culture- from ritual instruments and katana blades, to tea ceremony kettles and elegant one-of-a-kind artworks. This historic Kyoto metalcraft workshop, founded in the mid-Edo period and now led by its seventh-generation head, proudly carries on the unyielding legacy of Japan's metalcraft. Having begun first as a maker of sword fittings, they've shifted with the times, working primarily with silver to create a wide range of objects—from tea and incense ceremony utensils to Buddhist ritual pieces, with a specialized focus on silver—even challenging artistic excellence through creations made of 100% silver. See the shining prowess of professional metal artisans at work and witness centuries of Kyoto craftsmanship brought to life through flame, hammer, and hand.
