Historic allure

Wagasa, the iconic Japanese oil-paper umbrella, was first introduced from China during the Heian Period (794–1185). Originally, it was not intended to shield from rain, but rather to protect aristocrats and the imperial family from evil spirits. Over time, innovations allowed the umbrella to open and close with ease, while its bamboo frame and oiled paper covering made it both sturdy and waterproof, also providing shade for the user. By the Edo Period, wagasa had become a fashionable accessory for people of all social ranks, especially at festivals, tea ceremonies, and entertainment events. It was during this time that the craft flourished, producing umbrellas with vibrant, intricate designs. With the advent of Western umbrellas in the Meiji Period, wagasa declined in popularity, leaving only a few artisans and shops preserving the tradition. Today, these umbrellas continue to appear in religious ceremonies, festivals, and performances, carrying forward a centuries-old legacy of artistry and cultural significance. Join authentic wagasa artisans in Kyoto to immerse in the delicate beauty of these iconic crafts.
