Molded Creativity
In Kyoto, the name of kyo-yaki ceramics referred to pottery molded and fired in the Higashiyama ward of Kyoto. In addition, pottery created along the road leading to Kiyomizu Temple was specifically referred to as kiyomizu-yaki. However, they both came to be referred to simply as kyo-yaki. The rise of kyo-yaki was in tandem with the rise in popularity of tea ceremony during the Edo Period. It was during this time period that the potters Ninsei and Kenzan, known as the fathers of kyo-yaki, cemented the unique style of kyo-yaki pottery making, which was a blend of different styles, as well as personal expression. At this kyo-yaki pottery studio in northern Kyoto, the founder's fascination of experimenting with glazes to create new colors has encouraged this studio to continue this exploration, as well as solidify its own unique style of kyo-yaki: container designs made to "dress up" its contents. Experience a 400-year-old traditional Kyoto art and craft your own unique kyo-yaki ceramic piece under the guidance of the kyo-yaki ceramic master.
