Tradition by Thread
Luxurious fabric adorned in layer upon layer of precise stitching, some thread even gleaming with fragments of gold foil: the epitome of Kyoto elegance, Kyo embroidery is a craft that has shone throughout the centuries, beginning first as decorative embellishments on Buddhist imagery in the 6th and 7th century, to adorning the textiles of aristocratic garments, or even acting as the final touches of ostenatious brillance on Noh costumes. In contemporary times, this heritage remains stitched to the core of Kyoto culture, appearing on kimono, accessories, and everyday items. After the base design is inked, the colors picked, the thread prepared, the embroidered masterpiece must come together meticulously, the image arising out of layer upon layer of stitch in different size and hue. Amidst Kyoto's historic back alleys, join a team of embroidery artisans led by the 4th-generation head to stitch your own chapter to this celebrated Kyoto craft.
