All Roads Lead to the Tea Room
Nestled within a serene garden and historic temple near Shin-Osaka Station, hot water and green tea powder are skillfully combined to make bowl of matcha. The Japanese tea ceremony, known as chado (the way of tea), is a ritual practice bringing together all aspects of Japanese culture: food, philosophy, nature, architecture, and aesthetics. When powdered tea arrived to Japan around the 12th century from China, matcha quickly became a staple across the archipelago, spawning a unique tea culture and practice. Originally championed by the ruling classes, tea ceremony was opulent and flamboyant, a show of prestige and power. However, when Sen no Rikyu was appointed tea master to warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1579, a new, refined, and Zen-inspired practice of tea was born. Guided by hosts Sosoku-san and her husband Sōgo-san, discover Sen no Rikyu’s rustic style of chadō and experience different preparations of matcha and Japanese sweets.
