The birthplace of sake
Sake is often considered the representative spirit of Japan, but its modern form traces its roots back to Nara—a land of sacred mountains, ancient temples, and over a thousand years of tradition. It was in Nara’s temples that sake evolved from doburoku, a cloudy, unfiltered brew long consumed in Japan, into a refined, clear spirit that could be savored long after brewing, more akin to what can be found in the cups of today's izakayas and washoku establishments. Tucked away along winding village roads, framed by alpine peaks and pristine fields, stands a Nara sake brewery with more than 400 years of history. Once part of a bustling sake town, this brewery is among the few that have endured, carrying forward centuries-old methods while embracing subtle innovations. Each bottle reflects not only the craftsmanship of its brewers but also the spirit of Nara itself—its harmony with nature, reverence for tradition, and quiet resilience. Immerse yourself in the centuries-old heritage of Nara sake production at a locally beloved sake brewery for a true taste of Nara's cultural flavor and culinary heart.
