Brewing New Traditions
Sake is often called the spirit of Japan, a drink that has shaped the nation’s culture, rituals, and daily life for centuries. With a history of production recorded more than a thousand years ago, its place as Japan’s iconic beverage is undeniable. Yet, as Japan’s drinking culture evolved, so too did the breweries that carried its legacy forward. Founded in 1822 during the Edo Period, this brewery began its story in a region once celebrated as the “Land of Brewing.” For generations, it thrived on sake-making traditions, but as time passed, sake alone was no longer enough to sustain the region’s brewing heritage. In 1995, the brewery embraced innovation, becoming Osaka’s very first craft beer producer—boldly expanding its horizons while preserving its cherished roots in sake. Today, visitors can step inside the historic brewery buildings, where the aroma of steaming rice mingles with the scent of malt and hops. Guided by the head brewer, the tour reveals the artistry behind both sake and craft beer production, culminating in a tasting of premium selections. Past and present flow together, offering a rare chance to experience Japan’s brewing culture in all its evolving richness.
