People and Storks, Living Symbioticly
Once facing extinction, the Oriental White Stork was saved by the opening of a refuge and research center in Toyooka. After capturing the few remaining storks, they were bred in captivity until their numbers reached a level to be reintroduced into the wild. There are currently approximately 300 storks living in the wild in Japan. As these storks are a large, carnivorous bird near the top of the wetland’s food chain, ensuring the ecosystem can support their continued survival is a priority of the Toyooka preservation center. The park we will visit on this tour maintains a rich ecosystem managed specifically for the breeding and observation of storks. The wetland, which is closely connected to the lives of the people who live in the area, is rich with vegetation, fish, insects, and small animals. Here, one can sense a certain flow of tradition with people and storks living in a symbiotic relationship with nature. Join us on a truly unique tour to experience the Japanese way of life of respecting and supporting the local ecosystem.
