A Hair's Breadth

Brought to Japan by the monk Kukai, the art of fude brush making originated in China and quickly developed as a major craft in the present-day Nara Prefecture. And it was here where fude brush production flourished with high demand from local temples and shrines. From writing sutras to inscribing calligraphy pieces, the fude brush was and continues to be an instrumental tool used by religious institutions and calligraphy masters. Following techniques unchanged since the Nara period, this master craftswoman singlehandedly makes each fude brush by hand, with tools and skills passed down from her master before her. Step into her workshop and learn about the history of Nara fude brushes. Then, observe her at work, delicately selecting the assorted brush hairs. Finally, head upstairs to try your hand at the finishing steps in the brush-making process: assembling the brush and forming the brush tip with nori glue. Take home your completed fude, a traditional Japanese writing instrument that has survived the test of time.
