Natural Beauty, Down to the Very Fiber
Surrounded by towering cedar forests famed for their superior quality and overlooking the rolling curves of a freshwater river, this washi-crafting studio diligently preserves the art of crafting Japanese paper. While paper production originated in China, 7th-century Buddhist monks imported this historic craft to Japan in order to record sutras, and the art rapidly proliferated throughout the country, developing into a range of colors, textures, and designs. As water is crucial to crafting high-quality washi, Yoshino's crystal clear water and favorable climate have long enabled the region to flourish as a washi production hub. Even folkloric legends name Yoshino as one of Japan's most culturally essential washi locations, with it even being said that ancient royalty personally passed along washi-crafting techniques to the local villages.
Join a 6th-generation washi artisan who, in addition to actively using traditional washi-making techniques, works with world-renowned museums and organizations both domestically and internationally to repair paintings and national treasures. Under his careful instruction, learn how to create authentic washi paper, while enjoying the stunning scenic beauty of Yoshino.
