The taste of tradition
Once a thriving castle town, Izushi is still alive with history, culture, and the aroma of traditional Japanese sweets. For centuries, wagashiya (Japanese confectionery shops) have been an essential part of daily life here, drawing both locals and travelers to their delicate creations. In this experience, you’ll meet Yasuhiko, a third-generation wagashiya owner whose family has been crafting sweets since 1925. Stepping into his shop is like walking into the past, with photographs and memorabilia tracing nearly a century of history. Yasuhiko will share the story of his shop and the unique traditions of Izushi before welcoming you into the kitchen of a private Japanese home. There, under his guidance, you will learn the art of making wagashi—exquisite confections that embody the beauty of the seasons. To complete the experience, enjoy your handmade sweets during a tea ceremony at a nearby Zen temple. This immersive journey offers a rare opportunity to savor the timeless culture of Izushi’s samurai days.
