The Right Frame of Mind
From the sacred halls of Ise Jingu to the storied temples and museums of Japan, the craft of art restoration has safeguarded cultural treasures for centuries. Among its revered practitioners is a third-generation Mie restorer whose techniques trace back countless eras, singular in precision and care. In his atelier, fragile scrolls and centuries-old Buddhist images are revived through a multi-layered process that blends tradition with innovation. Devoting up to 6 months to restore just a single piece from start to finish, he utilizes different types of washi paper tailored to each individual process, as well as an aged glue made from the sacred water from Ise Shrine's wells, carefully tended to for over 10 years to preserve both purity and strength. In his studio, discover the quiet mastery behind Japan's most treasured works, where restoration and reverence entwine.
