While the Metal is Hot

Sparks fly as the tamahagane is hammered over and over, broken and reformed, folded repeatedly, to strengthen the metal that will be shaped by hand and fire to make a katana blade. The act of the repeated folding, hammering, and lengthening leads to the creation of what the katana blade is known for: a blade that can withstand breaking, chipping, or bending. Situated along Yamanobe-no-michi, one of Japan's oldest roads, this katana forge was started by the first-generation swordsmith, who went independent and began his own forge separate from his master's. He follows centuries old techniques passed down from his master. The finished products are where the swordsmith adds his own modern day touches, as well as exploring ways in which to bring katana forging techniques closer to modern use. Immerse yourself in the craft of traditional katana making at an active katana smith's forge. Then view completed works by the katana smith and learn how to appropriately appreciate katana blades.
