Woodcrafting, warmth, and generations of artistry

Yamanaka, long celebrated as a beloved onsen hot spring resort, is equally renowned for its exquisite lacquerware, known as Yamanaka Shikki. The craft of lacquerware, deeply rooted in over 1,300 years of Japanese tradition, was introduced to Yamanaka around 450 years ago. Surrounded by rich forests and blessed with fine local timber, artisans here developed unique techniques that distinguished their work from other lacquerware-producing regions of Japan. Unlike heavily coated lacquerware that conceals the wood, Yamanaka craftspeople pioneered a style tailored to onsen visitors who valued both practicality and beauty. They applied thinner layers of lacquer, carefully polishing the surface so that the natural grain of the wood remained visible. This distinctive style highlights the warmth and character of the wood itself while still providing the strength and durability for daily use. Join a generation of master artisans in their Kaga-Onsen studio as they continue to embody this balance of function and artistry.
