Into the Woods

From the interlocking serenity of Buddhist temples to the sliding screens and ranma carvings adding elegance to traditional Japanese washitsu rooms, woodworking is a crafting heritage synonymous with Japan. As Japan is more than 70% composed of mountains, resulting in a rich timber industry, woodworking crafts like sashimono, carpentry, and countless others, have flourished across the centuries. While classical Japanese society certainly embraced the beauty of wood in daily life, with Edo samurai prizing finely-joined cabinetry and wood an indispensable part of Heian aristocratic architecture, modern Japan still staunchly upholds its woodworking traditions. At this woodworking studio founded nearly 70 years in the past, join a team of artisans as they carry on this legacy, tackling a wide range of products, from renovating the wooden structures of nearby Kanazawa Castle to crafting wooden furniture for kindergarten classrooms. Led by a 3rd-generation artisan, who learned carpentry skills from both family and apprenticeships, immerse yourself in the intricate, everyday art of Japanese woodworking.
