Tradition, Tranquility, and Tea

The Japanese tea ceremony, or sado—literally “the way of tea”—is far more than the act of drinking matcha. It is a ritual shaped by centuries of philosophy, aesthetics, and hospitality. Every detail, from the choice of seasonal flowers to the selection of tea utensils, is guided by a pursuit of tea ceremony's core beliefs: harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. While powdered green tea imported from China in the 12th century was initially used in temples as a meditative aid, tea gatherings spread to the aristocracy and warrior classes, evolving into an art form where aesthetic and etiquette intersected. Among the surviving schools of tea ceremony still active today, Urasenke has become the most widespread, renowned for its honed attention to the guest’s experience and its enduring spirit of hospitality. Join an Urasenke tea ceremony master in a traditional-style building in the heart of Niigata City to fully immerse yourself in a moment of affable elegance—an encounter with a centuries-old art that continues to celebrate the beauty found in every simple connection.
