Lingers for a lifetime

Eian-ji Temple was founded roughly 500 years ago during the Muromachi period and relocated over 100 years ago to its current site atop a hill with sweeping views. Besides the main temple, there are several smaller structures housing Buddha statues scattered throughout the wooded grounds. Strolling through the pastoral surroundings, one is imbued by the sounds of swaying leaves, bird calls, and distant bells which inspire a spiritual introspection. Central to this practice is zazen, the Zen Buddhist art of seated meditation, which deepens that inner reflection. Practitioners sit with erect posture, legs crossed, eyes gently closed, and focus on relaxed, rhythmic breathing, allowing body, breath, and mind to harmonize. In zazen, the act of sitting itself becomes the purpose, a surrender to the present moment. For many, opening oneself to this practice can be an enlightening experience, leaving a lasting impression that resonates long after leaving the temple grounds.
