The sound of Japan

Taiko drums have resonated through Japanese history for centuries, serving as powerful instruments in festivals, religious ceremonies, and even on battlefields. Their deep, thunderous rhythms are more than music—they are a symbol of community, celebration, and spiritual connection, acting as the heartbeat of the Japanese people. At this historic wadaiko speciality store, located on the outskirts of Kanazawa and possessing a 400-year history of building and repairing taiko, see the sheer strength of this classical instrument. Upon entering, one is immediately struck by the sheer variety and sizes of taiko — from minuscule drums designed for children, to drums that can be slung over a shoulder while dancing or marching, to drums that are twice the height of an average person. The repair area of the shop is equally impressive, with taiko having come from all over the country for maintenance work. One can frequently see the name of the artisan who created a taiko or the name of its owner, making it fun to imagine the provenance of any given taiko. After seeing how taiko are crafted, learn from a professional player and experience the power of taiko drumming directly, before watching a drum performance by seasoned taiko professionals.
