Ikebana, or traditional Japanese flower arrangement, originated as a craft Buddhsit flower offerings. Brought from China around the 6th century, these early arrangements were placed on altars and emphasized spiritual devotion over purely decorative ornaments. It was later solidified into a formal art with the creation of the Ikenobo school for temples and the aristocracy in Kyoto in the 15th century. As time progressed, ikebana expanded past the inner circles of temples and the higher echelons of society, reaching the general public, with new styles developing as well. In the late 19th century, the emergence of the free-style arrangement allowed for ikebana to evolve, incorporating Western flowers and modern artistic concepts. Founded in 1926 by ikebana master Sofu Teshigahara, sougetsu-style is one such free-style arrangement of ikebana, which boasts of flexible arrangement methods as well as a stronger focus on ikebana as an art form. At this ikebana studio, learn about the myriad of possibilities in sougetsu-ryu ikebana. With support from the studio's ikebana master, create your own ikebana arrangement with fresh seasonal flowers.
