Temple Tranquility
On a forested hilltop overlooking Kanazawa, stately gates greet devout temple-goers, the path inwards lined with moss and foliage. With origins stretching over 700 years in the past, the current temple structure dates to the 17th century, when senior retainers of Kanazawa's prestigious Maeda clan relocated the temple to its current location. While now open to the public, doors were once closed to only monastic disciples undergoing strict Zen training: here, they would eat, sleep, and devote their lives to pursuing Soto Zen teachings. In these hallowed halls, join a head monk in an immersion into Zen Buddhism, echoing the pious hopeful-priests of ages past. As you wander the grounds, through structures deemed both national and regional tangible cultural assets, discover the connections between Kanazawa's history and Zen Buddhist practices. Just like both monks and samurai before you, engage in spiritual contemplation through Zazen meditation, seeking balance and calm through the Zen art of silent sitting.
