The medicinal king of mountains
Mt. Iouzen is a striking massif in Japan’s Hokuriku region, spanning Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture and Nanto City in Toyama Prefecture. Though its peak reaches a modest 939 meters (3,080 ft), the mountain is celebrated for its rich biodiversity, including a wide variety of wildflowers, mushrooms, and other botanicals, many prized for their medicinal and culinary uses. The mountain’s slopes offer multiple trailheads with paths of varying difficulty, making trekking accessible to outdoor enthusiasts of almost any age. Guided by Norimasa, a seasoned climber with encyclopedic knowledge of the local flora, visitors can explore the mountain’s lush ecosystems and discover how its plant life changes with the seasons. Along the way, you may spot rare alpine flowers or encounter mushrooms used in traditional remedies. At the trail’s summit, sweeping panoramic views reveal the historic city of Kanazawa below and the glistening expanse of the Sea of Japan. Experience a holistic perspective of Kanazawa from the medicinal king of mountains, Mt. Iouzen.
