Meet the master
Masayuki opened his own studio in which he, his wife, and two sons work. He began his trade focusing solely on high quality utensils for tea ceremony. As demand for such products dropped, he added jewelry design to his repertoire. The family of craftsmen work closely together to respect classical techniques and design while working hard to introduce a new era in lacquer work. Masayuki and his family warmly welcome you to tour their workshop for a unique hands-on experience in urushi-e painting.

This centuries-old craft has been carefully preserved and continually refined by generations of skilled artisans. To master the full range of urushi-e techniques, Yamanaka craftsmen have historically traveled across Japan, training under the guidance of other masters and absorbing a wealth of regional styles and methods. Yamanaka Shikki continues to embody the harmony of technical mastery and artistic expression, making it a pinnacle of Japanese lacquerware. At this studio, join a family of artisans working together to sustain this glittering craft for future generations.
