Discipline in Motion and Stillness
Developing from methods of wielding nihonto (Japanese katana), iaido emerged as a martial art during the Muromachi era, a period that saw the rise in power of the samurai class. The forms and motions, known as kata, that make up iaido are all methods linked to drawing one's katana to overcome an opponent or aggressor in a single moment. These motions are also conducted in tandem with meditation, where the practitioner seeks to train both the mind and body through developing a deeper understanding of the relationship between life and death, or between movement and stillness. As a result, many different schools and styles of iaido developed over time and have carried over the waves of time, teachers and students passing along their styles to the following generations. At this local town dojo in Kanazawa, experience the philosophy and kata of the Musoujikiden Eishinryu school of iaido from the grand-disciple of Nomura Joukichi, who brought this school of iaido to the Hokuriku region. Get dressed in the kimono and hakama training outfit and learn about the pristine balance between motion and stillness emphasized in iaido.
