One of a Kind
With over 1000 years of heritage and history, washi paper has evolved far from its origins in Buddhist sutras, housing poetry and literature, transformed into boldly-printed lanterns and screens, and even given as a precious gift among samurai warriors. Each region of production contains its own special characteristics, from the addition of small rocks and particles to add grit, to the utilization of different fibers, such as mulberry or mitsumata. In the Kaga region, ganpi-based washi paper has long been beloved for its luxurious sheen and glossy finishing, expertly suited to the elegant scroll of kana calligraphy or for crafting gold leaf paper, another regional specialty. Now, only one ganpi washi studio survives, sustained by a single family workshop operating since the late Edo Period. Join the 9th-generation head artisan as she continues to craft fine art from fibers during an immersive, private ganpi washi making workshop. Feel the artisan legacy of Kaga unfold page by page, as you experience firsthand the artistry and elegance of Kanazawa's ganpi washi paper.
