True Beauty from Bamboo

Bamboo objects, rich in color and expertly woven, stay tucked behind a steaming bowl of matcha during a tea ceremony, gentle hue warming the vivid green tea. Elsewhere, towering ikebana displays of seasonal blooms are held in the handcrafted basket, the blossoms an elegant explosion of shape and color above the subdued bamboo base. While takezaiku, woven bamboo crafts, is often categorized as a folk craft, Kanazawa elevates the craft to fine art, utilizing the products as a supporting accompaniment in other cultural art forms, like tea ceremony, ikebana, or even Noh theater. After the bamboo is selected and harvested, the materials must undergo a painstaking process of removing the plant's natural oils, drying, and slicing into precise, consistently-sized strips, before the bamboo weaving commences. Countless different woven bamboo patterns exist, such as crosses and hexagons, which can result in a near infinite amount of creative combinations depending on the artistry of the master. Join a bamboo artisan in her central Kanazawa studio, immersing into the art of bamboo. Learn directly from her, working together to craft your own woven bamboo work. Through this workshop, bamboo becomes more than a material—it becomes movement, memory, and meaning.
